In short we brief the Wellington Academy 6th Form in February, select our candidates in May, and then structure a 2 week programme for a number of students. The programme is largely London based and is fully funded by donations.
After taking four students in the first year, in 2011, the programme has now grown as the size of the 6th Form form at the Academy has grown. In the summer 2013, there were 15 students on the scheme and having them all together in London for two weeks brings further benefits as we organise talks, events, skills, skills classes. Furthermore, by being in a group their confidence is boosted allowing them to fully embrace the opportunity.
Beyond this, we also provide ad hoc assistance in terms of advice, or longer work placements.
2013 saw us extend the programme to include students from Swindon Academy and it was rewarding to see that adding to the programme not least in terms of new friendships being built. We intend to continue working with Swindon Academy as we can only see benefit from extending the opportunity to another set of school leavers.
