KS5

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Children’s Play, Learning and Development is a varied and interesting course which is designed to give you an insight into working with young children. At the end of the course you will have a qualification equivalent to 1 A Level. The units you will be studying are:

Year 12

Unit 1:  Child Development: Exam (compulsory unit)
You will learn about children’s development in five broad areas: physical, cognitive, language, emotional and social and will see how these areas of development are interlinked.

Unit 2: Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills
Controlled Assessment under exam conditions (compulsory unit) - You will understand how children develop literacy, language, numeracy and communication skills and how to promote and support this development.

Year 13

Unit 3: Play and Learning - Coursework (compulsory unit)
You will look at the principles of the importance of play, the influence of theories and approaches to play and how to provide and support purposeful paly and learning activities for children.

Unit 5: Keeping Children Safe: Coursework
It is essential that everyone working with children knows how to protect them from harm and understands that they have a duty to keep children safe.  You will learn the responsibilities of a professional to promote and maintain health and safety and what to do in an emergency or when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. 

Unit 6: Children’s Physical Development, Care and Health Needs: Coursework
You will learn the physical and health needs of children, develop skills to support their needs and learn how to recognise ill health and support ongoing health conditions. 

Work Experience

As part of the course you need to take part in 50 hours work experience. You will have to complete a Practical Evidence Portfolio which will include activities to support the units you have studied in class but it can also be used as a portfolio to use for your future career or education in Childcare.
